The members of this community, comprised of 78 families, are descendants of seringueiros (rubber tappers) with connections to the Piyãko family. For generations, these families have lived near the Ashaninka community in Brazil, cultivating the land and planting native fruit trees. However, recent government demarcation efforts have forced these families from their homes and the natural abundance that they had nurtured over decades.

In April, Benki and his team set out on a mission to locate suitable land for relocation and found a property spanning approximately 300 hectares close to the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute. By securing this land for the displaced community, Benki has averted the imminent threat of homelessness for these families, creating a new chapter in the long story between these families and his own.

With the support of the Institute, the families have begun resettling and are actively rebuilding their lives while once again assuming the role of stewards and caretakers of their new surroundings. Benki remains committed to bolster these efforts by providing assistance in the creation of a sustainable fish pond system and with reforestation efforts. Through this process, Benki and the community aim to cultivate another pillar of biodiversity and land stewardship in the region.

In February and March, the overflow of some of the main rivers, such as the Acre and Juruá rivers, triggered a state of emergency in 19 municipalities in the state of Acre, including Marechal Thaumaturgo, where the Institute is based. The floods devastated the homes of more than 2000 people in the municipality and destroyed crops, livestock and fish, creating widespread vulnerability and food shortages.

Within the Institute, the floods resulted in the loss of a approximately 90,000 fish. The Institute managed to mitigate some of the damage through focused efforts to recover fish, which were living in the ponds, and other animals that were swept away or displaced by the floods. As part of local recovery efforts, Benki initiated a program to address the severe lack of basic necessities, distributing food baskets and fish to the community.

The flooding necessitated an immediate harvest of crops to prevent further damage, leading the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute’s team to assist local farmers in harvesting cassava to produce flour, which can be stored for longer periods.

In April, Benki also supported neighboring communities in implementing their own fish tank systems. This is another example of the Institute’s ongoing commitment to nurturing food sovereignty in the region, fostering a resilient community capable of responding to the increasing environmental crises driven by climate change.

It was a momentous occasion as guests from across Brazil and around the world gathered to celebrate the union between Txukukaytxi (Rosane) Puyanawa and Raine Piyãko Asháninka.

Rosa’ne, a young activist, musician, and spokesperson for the Puyanawa community, joined hands with Raine, Vice President of the Yorenka Tatsorentsi Institute and eldest son of Benki Ashaninka.

Led by Cacique Joel Puyanawa and with wise words from Benki, the ceremony was a blend of cultures and traditions, symbolizing the unity between the two communities.

Amidst the rituals, symbolic items were exchanged, each carrying significance. The Ashaninka Women’s Kusma and Feather Crown, symbols of leadership and heritage, passed hands, signifying the integration of the two families. Additionally, the exchange of urucum and jenipapo, traditional paints of the Ashaninka and Puyanawa respectively, represented the merging of customs and values, weaving a tapestry of shared identity and purpose. As the day gave way to night, the festivities continued with vibrant music echoing through the village. The newlyweds, along with members of both communities, filled the air with melody, inviting all to dance and revel in the joyous occasion. Caiçuma flowed freely and laughter mingled with the sounds of guitars and drums, creating an atmosphere of pure celebration and unity. Raine and Rosa’ne’s wedding was more than a union of two individuals—it was a celebration of love, culture, and the power of community. As the echoes of their wedding songs faded into the night, they left behind a legacy of love that will continue to resonate for generations to come.

On Sunday February 25th 2024, the Government of Acre declared a State of Emergency for 17 municipalities, including Marechal Thaumaturgo, affected by flooding of rivers and streams.

Riverside inhabitants face widespread devastation. Families do not have access to food or electricity. Their fields, a source of food and livelihood, have been completely submerged by water. Chicken and ducks have drowned. Fish ponds are flooded and the fish are lost. Approximately 20,000 people are affected, of which 2,000 have lost their homes and belongings.

The Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute has not been spared, with portions of the premises completely submerged, including our fish ponds. Fish now swim where there was once solid ground. Some of the houses are inundated, their first floors submerged, along with the communal kitchen.

It is a desperate situation for the whole community. Through this fundraising initiative, we are committed to providing the necessary support to help people rebuild their lives. Our goal is to extend a hand to those in Marechal Thaumaturgo who have been forced to leave their homes and have lost their means of survival, while also fixing the damage incurred at the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute.

We appeal to everyone’s generosity to contribute donations and resources that will make a significant difference to the lives of this community. Together, we can encourage hope and recovery in this moment of great loss and devastation.

In November, Benki and a delegation representing the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute embarked on a journey to Europe, marking a pivotal continuation of Benki’s extensive international engagements as an environmental activist and leader.

During this tour, Benki actively participated in hands-on projects, showcasing his leadership and sharing practical insights. His influence over the years has inspired European partners seeking guidance on planting methodologies for reforestation efforts. Benki’s engagement included three strategic projects aimed at advancing ecological restoration in Europe and strengthening the global network of environmental stewards.

Federico Quitadomo, one of the partners inspired by Benki’s work, initiated a project in Italy, inviting Benki and his family to share their expertise. The collaborative effort integrated Amazonian agroforestry practices with local methods, resulting in the cultivation of a diverse array of trees. This included peach, apricot, mulberry, orange, clementine, phejoia, pomegranate, holm oak, and more.

The delegation also visited Suffolk, England, engaging in a project hosted at Tommaso Marzotto’s family home. This gathering included partners from Tree Sisters, anthropologists, and Institute supporters. Meaningful conversations fostered knowledge exchange, forming the basis of a regenerative interrelational web. Nearly 200 trees, comprising native fruit trees and nuts, were planted to support both human sustenance and the local ecosystem by providing food for birds and supporting regional wildlife.

In continuation of the tour, Benki visited the planting project in Vernessac, West France, led by Benjamin Stuhlmacher, who’s reforestation studies at the Institute led him to start his own planting project. The three-day initiative involved 60 people of all ages planting nearly 3000 trees, representing over 45 diverse species. Notably, the project also focused on safeguarding a water source by planting hundreds of water trees close to it.

Throughout these engagements, Benki not only shared teachings but also issued a call to action, highlighting the urgency of contemporary environmental challenges and emphasizing our shared responsibility in nature stewardship. This initiative reflects the Institute’s unwavering commitment to fostering international collaboration and knowledge exchange for the betterment of the planet.

Photographs by Stella Ismene, showing the planting initiative in Puglia, Italy.

On November 21st, The “Guardians of The Forests” series premiered at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco. Hosted by The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation during the Forests and Communities Initiative conference, this event introduced a documentary series highlighting the importance of preserving our planet’s vital forest ecosystems.

The series, led by five directors and showcasing five indigenous leaders entrenched within endangered primary forests across the globe, revolves around environmental preservation and biodiversity protection. The premiere gathered producer Muriel Barra, director Luc Marescot, and the five guardians: Benki Piyãko from Brazil, Hilarion Kassa Moussavou “Mambongo” from Gabon, Twyla Edgi Masuzumi from Canada, Mundiya Kepanga from Papua, and Tumursukh Jal from Mongolia. Their joint presence in Monaco before COP 28 was intentional, aiming to convey a strong message to the world about the urgency of environmental conservation.

The featured episode, “Brazil – Replanting the Amazon,” directed by Luc Marescot and highlighting Benki’s environmental initiatives, took center stage at the event. This selection held symbolic significance as the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation recently inaugurated a branch in São Paolo, Brazil, reinforcing the global importance of the showcased conservation efforts. Post-screening discussions delved deeper into each guardian’s environmental work, emphasizing the recognition of indigenous wisdom and the integration of their knowledge into global conservation endeavors.

The significance of this premiere extends beyond the confines of Monaco. Embarking on a two-week tour across France, the guardians aimed to extend their message and foster greater awareness about forests’ invaluable role in sustaining life on Earth.

On November 25th, The Guardian’s tour continued to the inaugural ‘Evian Summit. This summit brought together the Five Guardians in engaging workshops focused on the central theme of forest protection with the aim of empowering youth to actively participate in creating innovative and inclusive solutions. These collective efforts aimed not only at accessibility but also to instill commitments that resonate across generations, ensuring a sustainable and inclusive future for all.

On December 2nd, the five Forest Guardians convened once more for the highly anticipated documentary launch event at La Gaîté Lyrique in Paris. The occasion also included an engaging discussion session to foster interaction with the audience. Attendees were provided a unique platform to directly engage with the leaders, allowing them to pose questions and actively participate in a profound exchange of experiences.

“Guardians of The Forests” premiered on Arte TV on December 9 and became available on http://arte.tv starting December 2.

Additionally, a thousand students from French-speaking schools worldwide participated by submitting questions online, sparking important discussions on preserving our natural world.

This meeting held just before the anticipated COP28 gathering, emphasized the urgent need to protect our primary forests. Various pivotal topics took center stage between students and the five Guardians, delving into the ramifications of deforestation on communities, the symbolic importance of forests, and the indispensable value of indigenous wisdom in combating the effects of climate change.

One of the standout moments occurred when Benki shared the profound challenges Brazilian indigenous communities face daily. He highlighted the alarming disappearance of Brazil’s forests, sacrificed to make room for cattle farming. This dire situation significantly affects their food sources as the vanishing forests lead to river droughts, consequently causing the depletion of fish populations.

As we navigate the imminent challenges posed by climate change and heed the call to protect our forests, dialogues like these serve as powerful catalysts for awareness and action.

The episode “Brazil – Replanting the Amazon,” highlighting Benki’s environmental leadership, showed how indigenous communities foster forest conservation. The series aired on Arte TV on December 9 and was made accessible on http://arte.tv from December 2.

The conference included Sebastião Salgado endorsing forest restoration and praising Benki’s work. Benki emphasized our connection to nature and the responsibility for Earth’s well-being. Nemonte Nenquimo Waorami highlighted collective action and women’s role in decisions. Professor Carlos Nobre advocated blending Western science with indigenous wisdom. Txai Surui raised concerns about legislative threats to Brazilian indigenous territories, calling for global support.

The conference concluded collaboratively with breakout sessions, during which YTI contributed to drafting a Call to Action echoing the resolve to drive meaningful change through collective efforts. Additionally, a musical rendition of traditional Ashaninka chants performed by Raine Piyãko, Rosane Puyanawa, and Piyanko Piyãko paid tribute to the tireless guardians safeguarding our forests.

“Como um Beija Flor” features a collaborative effort, bringing together voices from Raine’s generation, including Piyanko Piyãko, Rosane Puyanawa, and Eriya Luiza. The EP also includes collaborations with Brazilian artists such as Lucas Noronha, Leo Barbieri, and Max Leblanc, resulting in a vibrant fusion of artistic expression.

The EP’s release was followed by Raine’s Live Debut at the Hotel Café in Los Angeles on June 5, organized as part of Benki’s tour in the US. Subsequently, in November, Raine embarked on the Institute’s Tour in Europe, delivering captivating performances in various settings, including the FCI Conference in Monaco on Nov 21-23, where he was invited by Prince Albert and the Monaco Foundation.

The diverse and enchanting sounds of “Como um Beija Flor” resonate globally, inviting listeners to join Raine on a musical exploration through platforms like Spotify, Soundcloud, and Apple Music.
In October, during the second day of the Institute-hosted conference titled “Dialogues on border territorial protection strategies in the Upper Juruá / Yurua / Upper Tamaya” (Brazil-Peru),” the Ashaninka community Apiwtxa, along with the Sawawo and Dulce Gloria communities, donated 300 “tracajás,” commonly known as yellow-spotted river turtles that are native to the region, to be bred, conserved and repopulated. This act is a testament to the ongoing collective efforts for regional wildlife preservation.

The yellow-spotted river turtle, among the largest South American river turtles, can weigh up to 8kg and boasts a lifespan of up to 30 years. Unfortunately, this species experienced severe exploitation during the American pet turtle trade in the 1960s, leading to a drastic decline in population and subsequent importation bans. Ongoing breeding and conservation efforts by the Asháninka people significantly impact the preservation and regeneration of Amazonian wildlife.

Since 1995, Benki and the Apiwtxa community have been exemplary in their commitment to the rewilding and local management of the tracajás population. Their efforts have successfully contributed to the recovery of river populations and the overall biodiversity of the region. To date, more than 15,000 tracajás have been reintroduced into the rivers.

Photograph by Stella Ismene showing an Ashaninka upholding one of the donated turtles.

In late August, Institute founder Benki Piyãko and his family briefly visited the Restauracao community, only to return to a sky that was obscured by wildfires around the Institute. The unfolding crisis marked a testament to community strength and dedication to safeguard the Amazon during an unprecedented three-month drought, sparking fierce wildfires.

Around Benki gathered a dedicated team, comprising the Institute staff, members from the Ashaninka village Apwitxa, and international supporters of the Institute that were present during the outbreak. The Mayor of Marechal Thaumaturgo, along with local volunteers and the Secretary of the Environment joined the combat on the frontline.

Several hectares of the Institute’s land were ablaze, and the Institute’s team worked tirelessly day and night, often traversing the burning ground with nothing but Havaianas on their feet.

In a moment of international solidarity, the Institute and the Boa Foundation issued a call to action, resulting in the provision of essential firefighting equipment by our global community. Water backpacks, a 60-meter hose, and other tools facilitated combat in hard-to-reach areas. Regional authorities responded to Benki’s plea, sending a small group of firemen and equipment from Cruzeiro do Sul, who, in collaboration with the Institute’s team, military personnel, and the Municipal Environmental Department, worked tirelessly to control the wildfires.

Wildfires ravaged for twelve days, devouring 1300 hectares of nearby rainforest and 100 hectares of our Institute’s native forest, surpassing five years’ worth of tree planting.

It was only collective action and prayer that the combat group could prevent even greater destruction and overcome the challenges of lacking infrastructure, revealing the valor of the local community willing to brave the flames to safeguard the forest and its inhabitants.

With a vision to safeguard the environment and nurture local communities, the Institute has embarked on a Fish Farming initiative. The Upper Juruá Region has been grappling with the adverse impacts of climate change. Prolonged droughts have desiccated rivers, lakes, and springs, crippling fish migration and posing significant challenges to local populations reliant on fishing for sustenance. In response to these challenges, the Institute has taken proactive steps to counter the looming social catastrophe by establishing 28 fish ponds. These existing fish ponds serve as sanctuaries for native fish species, including Curimatã, Piau, Tambaqui, Tambacu, and Tilapia.

The Institute’s Fish Farming initiative serves a dual purpose: to address the pressing need for food security and provide viable alternatives to traditional cattle ranching and illegal fishing practices in the region. With plans to expand this endeavor through an additional 80 ponds, the Institute aims to meet the heightened local demand caused by environmental adversities. The scarcity of fish due to climate-induced changes has affected families’ ability to secure adequate food. Benki and the team at the Institute aim to alleviate the region’s hunger, poverty, and food insecurity by bolstering pisciculture projects.
Central to the success of this initiative is the engagement of Marquinho, a pisciculture technician entrusted with overseeing the project. His role is pivotal in ensuring the sustainable production of high-quality fish, which will be made available at fair prices, enabling economically disadvantaged families to access nutritious food year-round. Moreover, this initiative presents an economic alternative to expanding cattle farms, contributing to environmental conservation efforts.

Beyond the immediate impact on the Institute’s community, Benki envisions a broader dissemination of knowledge. Through technical workshops and the establishment of breeding facilities, the Institute aims to equip other communities with the tools and expertise to cultivate their own food sustainably. This approach eliminates costly transportation from distant towns and fosters self-reliance within communities.

On August 16th, Benki Piyãko was invited to speak at a high-level dialogue with indigenous leaders across the Amazon Basin during the 2023 Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago, USA. The event, “An Urgent Call to Protect the Amazon: An Interfaith Rainforest Initiative Dialogue with Indigenous Peoples,” was delivered as a plenary session for the more than 7,000 religious leaders gathered at the Parliament. The plenary aimed to raise the voices of indigenous peoples in their fight for the protection of the Amazon and profile IRI – a flagship program of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) – as a shared platform for religious leaders to work shoulder to shoulder with indigenous peoples to protect forests and the rights of forest guardians, which can be watched here.

“When you talk about the forest and taking away the right to land from indigenous peoples, you talk about killing the Amazon, you talk about killing the planet. I would like all religions around the world to pay attention to this, not just for the Amazon but all the forests around the world. Plant the forests! Plant seeds! Instead of dropping bombs to kill people, drop bombs of seeds from within your hearts, souls, and minds,” underlined Benki, emphasizing the urgency of the cause.

Benki was joined by a distinguished panel of Amazonian indigenous leaders, including:

Sonia Guajajara, Minister of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil,
Chief Raoni Metuktire of the Kayapo People of Brazil,
Patricia Gualinga, Representative of Mujeres Amazónicas Collective,
Alicia Mojomboy and Miguel Evanjuanoy, Union of Indigenous Yagé Doctors of the Colombian Amazon (UMIYAC),
Daiara Tukano, Indigenous Artist and Human Rights Researcher,
Mapu Huni Kuin, President of the Hawa Karu Yushibu Center, and
supported by Native American representative Mona Polacca, a Hopi elder.

The event began with a poignant welcoming prayer and land acknowledgment led by Bodwéwadmi (Potawatomi), indigenous leader and Culture bearer of her indigenous nation in Chicago, and the Iron Bear drum group.

Dr. Charles McNeill, Senior Advisor on Forests and Climate for the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative (IRI) of the UN Environment Program (UNEP), and Mr. Carlos Vicente, National Facilitator of IRI-Brazil, provided a comprehensive overview of the critical need to protect rainforests and uphold the rights of indigenous peoples, as well as the crucial role of religious leaders and communities to support this cause.

Rabbi David Rosen, Co-President of Religions for Peace and Special Advisor to the Abrahamic Family House, delivered insightful remarks, emphasizing the moral imperative of the cause.

The Parliament of the World’s Religions, a founding partner of IRI, issued a resounding Call to Action, urging all its members to rise to the occasion in defense of the Amazon Basin and its indigenous communities.

The event concluded with a prayer led by Daiara Tukano, offering a profound moment of reflection and unity.

This monumental gathering was made possible through the generous support of the Indigenous Medicine Conservation Fund (IMC), Little Tree House, and the Boa Foundation.

This past May in New York City, Benki met with the distinguished human rights lawyer Steven Donziger. During their meeting, they had a robust exchange of ideas and stories about the paramount importance of safeguarding our planet, championing environmental justice, and protecting the human rights of local and indigenous communities in the Amazon rainforest.

Steven Donziger’s unwavering dedication to the cause of climate justice is nothing short of an inspiration. For decades, he has been at the forefront of the struggle to compel corporations to answer for their destructive actions toward our planet. His lifelong commitment to this cause has earned him accolades and recognition worldwide. Steven Donziger’s monumental role in the historic trial against Chevron 20 years ago, brought by Amazon communities in Ecuador, is a testament to his relentless pursuit of justice. Over eight years, the affected communities and their legal team fought tirelessly to secure a $10 billion judgment against Chevron. This landmark decision was resoundingly affirmed by six appellate courts and 28 judges, including the entire Supreme Courts of Ecuador and Canada.

Despite this unequivocal legal victory, Chevron has evaded its responsibility, opting to launch a multi-billion dollar campaign against Steven and the affected communities instead. The human toll of this corporate misconduct is staggering: hundreds of Indigenous peoples have lost their lives to cancer, tens of thousands face severe health issues, and the threat of death looms over countless others. The devastation is unfolding in the heart of the Amazon, affecting communities and ecosystems vital to South America and the entire planet.

The meeting between Benki and Steven serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring us all to redouble our efforts to fight climate justice and protect our planet and its people.

A diverse audience gathered at the Tibet House, the Cultural Center of H.H the Dalai Lama, in New York City for an enlightening evening with Benki, where he shared his insights into the Ashaninka mythology and how their ancient knowledge systems have kept the Amazon rainforest intact. In doing so, he highlighted the vital importance for indigenous and non-indigenous people to recognize the sacredness of life and all living beings in order to protect our natural environment.

Benki’s message lies in the belief that we are all part of a unique creation woven together by the creator’s spirit. This creation is our paradise – a world graced with the sun, the moon, water, and wind. To seek paradise, to seek God, is to recognize that we are already here. In Benki’s view, God is not distant but resides within us, for we are made of his spirit. We are his creation, and this paradise, with its waters, seas, fish, and fruits, is our home.

“Paradise is here.” Benki

He urged us to understand that respecting the natural world honors the creator’s work.
Benki’s talk was not just a lecture but a call to action. It was an invitation to embrace our role as custodians of this paradise and to recognize that paradise is not a distant dream but a reality we must cherish and protect. In doing so, he responded to a series of questions from the public about forest preservation, cultural values, and traditional medicinal knowledge of the Amazon rainforest.

Benki emphasized that the guardianship of the Amazon isn’t merely a matter of ecological preservation but a cultural and spiritual imperative for the indigenous communities that call this marvelous rainforest home. Their age-old wisdom passed down through generations, holds the key to maintaining the delicate balance of this vital ecosystem and the sacred interconnectedness that permeates all life, echoing the ancient wisdom of his Ashaninka ancestors.

Photo by Anton Rivette featuring Ben Meeus and Benki Piyãko.

In an urgent call to action, during the peak of the summer, the global community united to address a critical threat facing Brazil’s indigenous peoples. The Articulation of Indigenous Peoples of Brazil (APIB) sounded the alarm on Bill 490/2007, legislation that will bring severe consequences to the rights and well-being of Brazil’s indigenous communities. It poses a risk of permitting the exploitation of natural resources in Indigenous territories and stipulates the recognition of Indigenous land rights solely for those residing there or actively defending those rights at the time of the Federal Constitution’s enactment on October 5, 1988.

Benki Piyãko, supported by the Yorenka Tasorentsi Institute and indigenous leader Txai Surui, led a collaborative effort. Partnering with organizations like Amazon Watch, Grounded.org, Earthrise Studios, Re: Wild, and more, they launched international petitions on Change.org and Avaaz.org, garnering global support.

The campaign saw an outpouring of support, with notable figures such as Billie Eilish, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jada Pinkett Smith, her children Willow and Jaden Smith, Mark Ruffalo, and many others lending their voices. Their participation elevated the campaign’s visibility, drawing attention to the impending threat to indigenous rights and the potential environmental consequences.

The success of this campaign was not merely measured in celebrity endorsements but in the broad coalition of concerned individuals who signed the petition, adding their voices to the call for justice. The international community’s response demonstrated a shared commitment to protecting indigenous rights and recognizing their global significance amidst climate change and deforestation concerns.

The campaign’s conclusion marked the continuation of a legal battle. In September, the Supreme Court deemed the law unconstitutional, prompting Congress to approve the bill. President Lula’s partial veto on October 20th was overturned by Congress on December 14th, favoring the agribusiness lobby and connected farmers. APIB and the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples aim to challenge this through an appeal at the Supreme Court, amplifying voices advocating for the protection of indigenous rights in Brazil.

The Parliament was held from November 1-7, 2018 in Toronto, Canada, and indigenous spiritual leaders from Peru (Elena Valera Vasquez, Shipibo), Colombia (Miguel Evanjuanoy Chindoy, Inga), and Brazil (Benki Piyãko, Asháninka) were joined by a team of key players in the global ayahuasca spiritual movement. The objective, which was successful, was to effectively raise awareness on traditional spiritual practices of indigenous peoples and other religious/therapeutic minority groups in which the use of ayahuasca stands central. As such, a multidisciplinary approach was facilitated through the inclusion of researchers and representatives of the Union of Indigenous Yagé Medics of the Colombian Amazon (UMIYAC), the Santo Daime church, and ICEERS.

The Parliament of the World’s Religions is the world’s largest and most diverse interfaith gathering, which takes place every four years in different cities around the world. It is attended by thousands of people representing over 200 religions and spiritual traditions, gathering in mutual respect and working together to discuss solutions to humanity’s global problems such as climate change, war, poverty, sexism, racism and other forms of discrimination and injustices.

The group of 15 people collectively made an impression on the thousands of people gathered at this event – people from different walks of life who were open to hearing about the importance of spiritual and religious protection for ayahuasca traditions. Men and women from around the world have opened their hearts and minds to the message of the Amazonian individuals who participated. This message not only included a strong demand for legal recognition of traditional medicinal and spiritual practices with ayahuasca, but also a plea to take care of mother nature. They consider the widespread destruction of nature as an endangerment to traditional knowledge, spiritual traditions and the cultures of indigenous peoples, and that therefore both issues need to be addressed simultaneously. Mainly because traditions with plant medicines facilitate the reconnection with nature, helping us address the current planetary crisis more effectively.

In recognition of the spiritual traditions that work with ayahuasca, the Parliament of the World’s Religions had offered the indigenous group the main stage during the Justice assembly. As they stood on stage together, listening to icaros from Elena and Benki, the group was invited to join the the collective prayer for a stronger recognition of ayahuasca as a traditional medicine.

Ayahuasca is a master plant and/or a religious sacrament used by indigenous peoples, and increasingly non-indigenous people around the globe. All to ensure a future where carriers of this medicine can move freely and where the sacred lands of the indigenous stewards are protected and restored to their care.

Activities:

Ayahuasca Spiritualities double booth:
The presentation room (booth) in the exhibit hall was permanently staffed by members of the collaboration who spoke with hundreds of peoples about ayahuasca over a 7-day period. The booth included an alter featuring key artifacts related to ayahuasca spiritualities, flyers and framed posters/pictures.

Ayahuasca Spiritualities presentations:
This was a formal 1.5 hour presentation on ayahuasca spiritualities, featuring 5 speakers. This presentation was accepted through the formal Parliament submission process. (Part 1 and Part 2, livestream videos)

Public fundraising event:
This evening event was organized by the Toronto Psychedelic Society on November 3 at Alternity community café and space. It was attended by – mostly locals – from different sectors of society and featured talks by delegation members, audience Q&A, and the sharing of sacred songs.

Main stage performance:
All 15-members of the group were invited onto the main stage of the parliament to introduce ayahuasca spiritualities in a brief discourse (presented by Benjamin Mudge). Elena Valera Vazquez (Shipibo, Peru) and Benki Piyãko (political and spiritual leader of the Asháninka, Brazil) shared sacred songs with thousands of parliament attendees. (Video of Elena’s Icaro livestreamed: skip to 1hour45mins)

Entheognic plant medicine presentation:
This was a two-hour presentation in collaboration with the delegation from the Indigenous Peyote Conservation Initiative. “Entheogenic Plant Medicines: An Introduction for Spiritual Practitioners” was attended by a diverse audience that included representatives from UN Environment, indigenous peoples, spiritual leaders, and Parliament attendees.

Interfaith Rainforest Initiative
During his participation at the Parliament, Benki Piyãko (Asháninka, Brazil) was invited to an additional panel organized by the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative, an important international and interfaith partnership on forest conservation funded by UN Environment. Also included in the panel discussion was Davi Kopenawa Yanomami – a well respected indigenous leader from Brazil. (Video of presentation by Benki Piyãko at minute 12:05)

Dozens of parallel meetings and participation in Parliament events.

Crowdfunding campaign video:
Crowfunding video was viewed over 30,000 times and posts and livestreams from the event received thousands of views, likes, and shares. The video made it possible for all these viewers to feel included in the mission to the Parliament. Over 190 individuals contributed to the crowdfunding campaign.

This global stage represented an important opportunity to introduce the ayahuasca spiritual movement, at a time when ayahuasca ceremony facilitators are suffering religious persecution because the tea is getting caught in international drug control mechanisms. Furthermore, the indigenous ayahuasca spiritual traditions have profound spiritual wisdom, and deep connection with Mother Nature, which are precisely the positive influences that Western society needs in this critical era. In fact, many of the words shared by our Amazonian group members spoke to the importance of ayahuasca in supporting their communities to implement strategies to maintain ecological balance in a time where their territories are threatened by extractive industries and policies.
